‘The Bachelor,’ ‘Need for Speed,’ ‘Frozen’: What people are watching and listening to

A great way to gain insight into our country’s psyche? Take a look at what we’re watching on TV, going to see in the movie theater, and listening to on the radio or on our iPods. Every Wednesday, Billboard releases music stats for the past week, so we take the opportunity for some quick analysis all of the above topics and what pop culture is truly the most popular at the moment.

All those ads featuring the scary little girl with supernatural powers paid off, as NBC’s new J.J. Abrams drama “Believe” makes a strong debut. And ABC’s latest, “Resurrection” maintains its Top 10 spot, only shedding a couple million viewers from its premiere. Not too many other surprises on this list — plenty of people enjoyed epic trainwreck “Bachelor” finale, as Juan Pablo made host Chris Harrison angrier than we’ve ever seen him.

The only reason “Duck Dynasty” is left off this week’s list? It wasn’t on last week. (Though it has a new episode Wednesday night.) Otherwise, cable continues to show us that people in America like zombies, wrestling, TV detectives and talking sponges.

* First week in theaters

Aaron Paul’s car-racing action drama “Need for Speed” did okay, but many were expecting it to take the top spot this week. Instead, it was all about the “Mr. Peabody” cartoon, which makes sense given how many kids were on spring break this weekend. Tyler Perry’s “The Single Moms Club” didn’t do great, but as Jen Chaney points out in her review, it’s okay because there will likely be another Tyler Perry movie showing up in six months.

And what about “Veronica Mars”? The highly-anticipated movie adaptation racked up $2 million while only being in select theaters; and while you could also download it online or watch on-demand, the movie theater seems like a smarter choice, given the amount of technical problems that plagued fans. About 242,000 tickets were sold, according to Buzzfeed, while around 91,000 donated to the Kickstarter campaign that started it all. So, was all the fuss worth it? With a production budget of $6 million, it’s hard to say (or tally up the on-demand fees). And while diehard fans would definitely say yes, studio Warner Bros. will ultimately decide whether to deem the experiment a true success.

TOP ALBUMS/SONGS (via Billboard)

Apparently, “Frozen” is just going to keep on dominating everything and you should just get used to it. The unstoppable animated feature’s soundtrack hits No. 1 yet again, selling 99,000 copies for a total of 1.4 million since its release. Country superstar Luke Bryan proves that just because you’re 37-years-old doesn’t mean you need to stop celebrating spring break: His annual springtime EP (“Spring Break 6 … Like We Ain’t Ever”) hit No. 2 with 74,000 in sales. And Aloe Blacc (the singer you hear on Aviici’s smash “Wake Me Up”) released his solo album, “Lift Your Spirit,” and moved 45,000 units for his best ever first-week showing. Other debut albums include country singer Sara Evans, hitting No. 9 with 27,000 copies.

Pharrell Williams also remains on top as “Happy” spends another week at No. 1 on the songs chart, while the Chainsmokers’ “#Selfie” makes it to No. 6. DJ Snake and rapper Lil Jon make a Top 10 comeback, as “Turn Down for What” jumps to No. 9.
