Leading up to the unveiling of the “Star Wars: Episode VII” cast, all the buzz was about whether Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) would make an appearance in the film, the first produced by Disney since the company bought the LucasFilm franchise.
The answer: Yes! They will all be involved. But that famous trio is still only three out of a long cast list, which also includes some other old favorites such as Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Kenny Baker (R2-D2).
Just as interesting is the collection of new faces joining the franchise. Here’s where you’re most likely to have seen these actors before:
Adam Driver: The 30-year-old actor rocketed into the spotlight with a few really gross scenes as Lena Dunham’s slightly unhinged boyfriend on HBO’s “Girls,” but has since won acclaim (and an Emmy nomination) for his performance. Rumor is he’ll play a villain in this film.
Oscar Isaac: He had a breakout year in 2013, playing the title character — a 1960s New York folk singer — in the Coen Brothers’ critically-acclaimed “Inside Llewyn Davis.” (Driver also appeared in this film.)
John Boyega: An English actor, he starred in British horror comedy film 2011 “Attack the Block,” from the same production company behind “Shaun of the Dead,” “The World’s End” and others.
Max von Sydow: At age 85, he’s a two-time Academy Award nominee for his roles in Swedish drama “Pelle the Conquerer” (1987) and the adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s book “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” (2012).
Andy Serkis: He’s Gollum in the massive “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movie franchises. Enough said.
Domhnall Gleeson: A Broadway star that you might also recognize from the “Harry Potter” films — he plays Bill Weasly, Ron’s brother. (His dad, Brendan Gleeson, is also in the “Potter” films as Alastor Moody.)
Daisy Ridley: Um….she had a guest role on PBS’s “Mr. Selfridge” starring Jeremy Piven? So far this mostly-unknown actress is the biggest mystery of the cast with just a few TV roles to her credit. It’s safe to say that this will be her big break.
