Ah, the joys of summer and B-list award shows. Out are the constraints of cold weather and serious prestige. In are the nights when anything goes, at least as far as clothes.
The Billboard Music Awards offer an evening when a gorgeous, full-length Roberto Cavalli gown (Shania Twain) can be seen just feet away from a metallic jumpsuit (we’re looking at you, Kendall Jenner). It’s a glorious night of mixed messages and random bright spots.
Iggy Azalea continued to fulfill all of our high fashion and ‘Clueless’ dreams. Her red Zuhair Murad from the 2014 Pre-Fall collection was gorgeous, though a little more appropriate for Cannes than the Billboard Awards.
And her plaid cheerleading outfit makes a solid case for pompom shoes.
Lorde also stayed true to her quirkiness in a black feathered Lanvin jacket from the Fall 2014 collection. The proportions were better on the runway with a matching skirt rather than black pants, but that would have required the “Tennis Court” singer to show her legs and perhaps the world is just not ready for that.
Nicki Minaj was a standout in a black cut-out Alexander McQueen dress. Her toned-down beauty look has done wonders in presenting a more mature image. Though the under-boobs were still out in full force, so, you know, baby steps.
Kesha, on the other hand, looked healthy and refreshed, which was good to see after she spent a short stint in rehab. Her skin looked dewy, her hair was naturally tousled and the dress fit perfectly. The overall effect was lovely. Kudos.
Carrie Underwood’s sheer yellow Oriett Domenesch with silver embellished overlay on top of a plunging neckline was, well … pass.
Miranda Lambert made a sexy statement in a hot pink Georges Hobeika minidress. Though the harsh black pumps were all sorts of wrong. Shakira seemed to suffer from the same heavy black shoe issue.
