2014 Creative Arts Emmys winners: Five things they tell us about the Primetime Emmy Awards

The 2014 Creative Arts Emmys are known as the “technical” awards, which is true — the prizes range from sound editing to lighting to makeup and costumes. But if you look a little closer at some of the less glamorous categories, you can find a few small hints about how awards may fall next week for the big show.

There are still 26 categories left for the Primetime Emmy Awards next Monday, so here are five things that the winners of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards (which were held Saturday evening in Los Angeles) tell us about what could happen:

(Full list of nominees and winners below.)

1) “Orange is the New Black” could have a very big night next week.

The Netflix women’s prison drama walked away with three prizes Saturday, which may foreshadow a very exciting evening in the major categories. The show, which is definitely not laugh-out-loud hilarious but has 12 nominations in the comedy category, won Casting for a Comedy and Single Picture Editing for a Comedy. Plus, a big one: a Guest Actress in a Comedy trophy for Uzo Aduba, who plays an inmate named Crazy Eyes. (Aduba won out over two of her cast members, Laverne Cox and Natasha Lyonne.) While many questioned why those actresses could qualify as “guest stars,” given that they were pretty regular characters, looks like submitting in that category paid off.

2) “True Detective” is gearing up for some wins as well.

HBO’s acclaimed crime noir series swept up four awards in the drama race, momentarily quieting those concerned that plagiarism accusations could plague the show’s chances for trophies — of course, ballots for this show were due before the claims went mainstream. Anyway, in addition to winning Single-Picture Editing for a Drama, Makeup for a Single-Camera Series and Main Title Design, the show  picked up the prize for Casting for a Drama. The casting prize is a telling one, as the dramas that land that award generally do very well on the big night.

3) The reality competition show category is due for another shake-up.

The TV Academy finally took a close look at reality TV categories this year and split the burgeoning genre into two groups: “structured” and “unstructured” shows. That move helped land ABC’s “Shark Tank” (structured) its first Emmy and scored another trophy for Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch” (unstructured).

Maybe spicing up the categories helped voters see things differently, too, because “Hollywood Game Night’s” Jane Lynch won Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program — generally an award reserved for a more established show, such as Jeff Probst of “Survivor,” Tom Bergeron of “Dancing With the Stars” or Heidi Klum/Tim Gunn of “Project Runway.” In any case, we’re thinking the trophy for Reality-Competition Program, which is awarded to “The Amazing Race” generally every single year with a couple of exceptions, could finally crown an unexpected winner. (Is this the year for “So You Think You Can Dance”?)

4) “The Colbert Report” may triumph over “The Daily Show” again for Variety Series.

Last year, Stephen Colbert and his team snapped Jon Stewart’s decade-long streak for the Variety Series category. The odds are on Colbert’s side again, especially since he’s been crowned David Letterman’s successor, and even more so now that the show also scored the win in the coveted Writing for a Variety Series category.

5) Lizzy Caplan of “Masters of Sex” could be a dark horse winner.

While Julianna Margulies seems like the obvious choice to win the Lead Actress in a Drama crown, Allison Janney’s Guest Actress in a Drama win for her role on “Masters of Sex” proves that TV academy voters are watching the acclaimed Showtime series. Could first-time nominee Lizzy Caplan sneak through with a win if Margulies, “House of Cards” star Robin Wright and “Scandal” lead Kerry Washington split the vote?
