Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, who love the spotlight more than most, are living apart

Rumors of divorce have plagued Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon for months. On Thursday, Cannon finally spoke out about the headlines and confirmed that they may be headed toward a split.

“There is trouble in paradise. We have been living in separate houses for a few months,” Cannon told “The Insider with Yahoo” adding, “My main focus is my kids.” He and Carey have 3-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe.

While you can never really bet on a celebrity marriage to go the distance — and who knows how it will all go, though TMZ says a divorce is imminent — this A-list couple made a whirlwind six-week courtship and subsequent marriage last almost six years. Pop powerhouse Carey, 44, and “America’s Got Talent” host Cannon, 33, got hitched in 2008 at a surprise ceremony at Carey’s house in the Bahamas, calling each other “soulmates.”

Afterward, they embraced the spotlight with a vengeance that was unusual for such a high-profile couple. Every year, the pair would hold an elaborate vow renewal and post many splashy photos, such as the wildly elaborate spectacle at Disneyland in 2013. (This year was the first year they haven’t done one, which many predicted spelled doom.)

The couple’s fraternal twins, Moracco and Monroe, were born in spring 2011 — Carey never missed a chance to dress them in elaborate costumes and post about their adventures on Instagram.

Both have stayed busy in the past several years — and “sources” cited on gossip sites say the couple’s careers contributed to the marital problems. Carey judged “American Idol” — that ended in disaster— and released new music. The incredibly-named “Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse,” her first album in nearly four years. There’s even a track on it dedicated to her kids, called “Supernatural (with special guest stars “Dembabies” a.k.a. Ms. Monroe & Mr. Moroccan Scott Cannon a.k.a. Roc ‘N Roe).”

Cannon, meanwhile, continued to host a wide variety of programs including NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and MTV2′s revival of “Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out.” He also had a huge deal with Nickelodeon to develop programming.

While the tabloids are buzzing with reasons for all the couple’s issues, it could mean the end to incredible celebrity photos like this — which is just very sad for everyone.
