Maryland’s always-quotable defensive lineman, he of the infinite Grandpa Shaky stories who could hold court with reporters for hours if permitted, was named to Sports Illustrated’s second-annual Twitter 100 , which lists the feeds staffers considered “essential to their daily routine for finding news, information and entertainment from the sports world. ”
Francis’s account, @The_Franchyze, certainly qualifies under the ”entertainment” spectrum. Opining on topics ranging from WWE events to his personalized #FatGuyFriendly hashtag to the Terrapins anthem that blares across campus, Francis has transferred his wildly captivating persona into the digital world.
Francis is the only college athlete on the list and is also the only honoree with fewer than 3,000 followers. Just 24 of the 100 are active athletes, a swath that includes Kevin Durant (2.9 million followers), Metta World Peace (458k) and Arian Foster (234,000 followers). Foster, Francis and Vikings punter Chris Kluwe are the only football players.
True to form, Francis took note of his unique amateur status on the Twitter 100.
I’d like to point out that I’m the only broke amateur athlete on that list too... You hear that sponsors? I’m fair game in 4 months!
For your entertainment, here’s a smattering of A.J. Francis tweets. Bear in mind, these are all from the past three days. Feel free to go deeper into the Franchyze Rabbit Hole. It’ll be well worth it.
