With an eye toward capturing a national TV audience, ACC and Maryland officials have rescheduled the dedication ceremony in which the Comcast Center floor will be named for Gary Williams. Initially scheduled for Dec. 9, the date has been changed to Jan. 25.
Unlike the initial date (a random Friday that didn’t fall on a game night), the Jan. 25 date coincides with the Terps’ home game against Duke and will allow the ceremony to be part of ESPN’s national broadcast. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m.
The decision to name the floor in honor of Williams, who led his alma mater to the 2002 NCAA championship and a 461-252 record during his 22-year career in College Park, was announced in September. The tribute was recommended by school president Wallace D. Loh in recognition of Williams’s service to Maryland athletics and the university as a whole.
Williams announced his retirement in May.
