This should not surprise anyone. Three Maryland players earned ACC player of the week honors with their performances in Monday night’s 32-24 victory over Miami.
Quarterback Danny O’Brien was named the offensive back of the week. O’Brien completed 31 of 44 passes for 348 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 37 yards. His 385 total yards were the third-most in the FBS in the opening weekend.
Defensive tackle Joe Vellano was named co-defensive lineman of the week. Vellano recovered two fumbles, the first of which led to a field goal and the second of which he scooped up and ran 30 yards for a touchdown, his first touchdown since the eighth grade. Vellano also made two tackles.
And cornerback Cameron Chism was named defensive back of the week. Chism intercepted Miami quarterback Stephen Morris’s pass on fourth and three and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown in the game’s final minute. Chism also forced the fumble that Vellano caught in midair and returned for a touchdown. Chism had six tackles, include one tackle for loss.
