News of note for fans headed to Maryland’s ACC opener against Wake Forest

Former Maryland linebacker Shawne Merriman, currently with the Buffalo Bills, will sign autographs at Comcast Center before Maryland’s 7 p.m. tip-off against Wake Forest on Wednesday.

Merriman will be on hand to host his Lights On Foundation’s ninth annual coat drive during the game. Terrapins fans are encouraged to donate new or gently used coats, hats, scarves and gloves to be distributed to those in need in the area. Fans can drop off their donations at Gates A and E inside Comcast Center.

Merriman, a three-time All-Pro selection chosen in the first round of the 2005 NFL draft, will be available for the autograph session from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. behind Section 207.

Fans who’d like to donate to Merriman’s coat drive but can’t attend the game can drop off items in the Academic Center on the first floor of the Comcast Center until Jan. 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

With Wednesday’s game tipping off at 7 p.m., fans are encouraged to arrive early and advised to avoid using the Campus Drive entrance to the university off U.S. Route 1.
