Terps college football preview magazine roundup: Athlon

The calendar says it’s June and it’s still far too warm, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start thinking about college football, especially with all the preview magazines starting to grace newsstands this week. So over the next couple of days, we’ll take a look at what the mags are saying about the Terrapins. Maryland and Miami kick off in a mere 95 days.

TODAY: Athlon.

PRICE: $7.99.

NATIONAL EDITION COVER STARS: Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o, Wisconsin running back James White.

REGIONAL EDITION COVER STARS: Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien, Virginia defensive back Chase Minnifield. That’s two covers for O’Brien. Not too shabby for a sophomore.

MARYLAND PREDICTED FINISH: 8-4, 6-2, third in the ACC Atlantic behind Florida State and North Carolina State.

MARYLAND PREDICTED BOWL: Music City Bowl vs. Auburn.

MARYLAND NATIONAL RANK: 33.

MARYLAND OPPONENTS IN ATHLON TOP 25: Miami (No. 19), West Virginia (No. 17), Florida State (No. 4), Notre Dame (No. 6 — really?).

OTHER MARYLAND OPPONENT RANKINGS: Temple (No. 96), Towson (NR), Georgia Tech (No. 50), Clemson (No. 38), Boston College (No. 45), Virginia (No. 75), Wake Forest (No. 83), North Carolina State (No. 31).

MARYLAND ACC RECRUITING RANKING: No. 9 (no Maryland recruit listed among top 40 ACC signees).

MARYLAND ALL-ACC PLAYERS: QB Danny O’Brien, DL Joe Vellano, LB Kenny Tate, PR Tony Logan on first team. RB Davin Meggett on second team.

ON RANDY EDSALL: In the “Coaching Carousel” section, Athlon says “this is a curious hire” and “strange move.”

MISCELLANEOUS: O’Brien, Meggett, RB D.J. Adams and WR Adrian Coxson listed as possible targets for your fantasy college football draft.

GIST OF THE MARYLAND PREVIEW: Danny O’Brien good, Torrey Smith gone, kicking game a concern, Edsall has some good pieces in place for a strong first season at Maryland.

CHEESECAKE PHOTOS OF CHEERLEADERS?: Yes.
