One of the positives this regular season was how many freshmen saw significant action for Maryland. Three of those freshmen — defensive linemen Keith Bowers and Andre Monroe and linebacker Lorne Goree — were named to the College Football News Freshman all-America teams on Friday.
Monroe, who was named to the second team, ranks second in the Football Bowl Subdivision in sacks among freshmen (.56 per game). Monroe played in nine games because of injury, but he wound up starting four games at defensive tackle. He leads ACC freshmen in tackles for loss.
Bowers and Goree were honorable mention selections. Bowers started the final 11 games at defensive end and he finished the season with 36 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Goree played in all 12 games and ranks second among ACC freshmen in tackles.
