Expected to shoulder a hefty portion of the rushing load, true freshman running back Wes Brown was ruled out of Saturday’s game at Virginia because of a shoulder ailment.
That leaves sophomore Justus Pickett, who scored the winning touchdown in a 19-14 victory over Wake Forest last weekend, Brandon Ross and Albert Reid in the backfield. Earlier this week, Coach Randy Edsall said Pickett and Brown would be Maryland’s featured backs, but that could now shift to Pickett and Ross, with Reid contributing in short-yardage situations.
As expected, defensive back Matt Robinson (groin) was listed as out, alongside wide receiver Kerry Boykins (hip/groin), who will miss his second straight game, and linebacker L.A. Goree (neck), who hurt himself during pregame warm-ups last Saturday and had to miss the game.
Following those four definitive outs are a cavalcade of probables. Try to keep up: Pickett (illness), LB Kenneth Tate (knee), OL Andrew Zeller (knee), OL Justin Gilbert (knee), DB Jeremiah Johnson (knee), DL Darius Kilgo (ankle), OL Nick Klemm (knee), OL De’Onte Arnett (ankle), and of course DL Joe Vellano (foot).
So that’s seven starters, including two starting offensive linemen, and two reserve offensive linemen who used to be starters, all listed as probable.
