Maryland junior forward Alyssa Thomas was voted ACC preseason women’s basketball player of the year and was one of three Terrapins named to the preseason all-conference team on Tuesday at the ACC media day in Greensboro, N.C.

Picked to finish second behind Duke in the ACC, Maryland (31-5 last season) was the only school to have three players selected named to the preseason all-conference team.

Last season, Thomas became the first sophomore in Maryland history to be named ACC player of the year. The versatile forward led the Terrapins to a record 10th ACC tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA tournament region final.

Joining Thomas on the preseason first team are senior center Tianna Hawkins and junior guard Laurin Mincy.

Hawkins (Riverdale Baptist) averaged 12 points and 9.1 rebounds and led the country in field goal percentage (61.3). Last season, Hawkins set the program record for rebounds in one game (24) and was named second-team all-ACC.

Mincy, meantime, started  35 of 36 games and was named honorable mention all-conference after averaging 13.1 points and 4.5 rebounds.
