Alex Len named ACC player of the week

November 12, 2012

Alex Len might want to get used to this. After performances like Maryland’s sophomore center had in the season opener against Kentucky, the hardware should begin rolling in more often, and in greater numbers.

For now, this will suffice: Len was named the ACC player of the week following a 23-point, 12-rebound breakout performance at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, also matching a career high with four blocks on the national stage in the Terps’ 72-69 loss to the third-ranked Wildcats.

Seven of Len’s rebounds came on the offensive end, and he shot 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) from the floor, displaying a dazzling array of dunks, spin moves and even a feathery 18-footer from the left wing that splashed through the net. The Ukrainian product, boasting new strength and added confidence, outshined even Kentucky’s best.

North Carolina State freshman Rodney Purvis was named the ACC rookie of the week after scoring a team-high 16 points for the sixth-ranked Wolfpack in a 97-59 win over Miami (Ohio).

Coach Mark Turgeon was heading to the Comcast Center, site of Monday’s home opener against Morehead State, when he heard of Len’s honor, promptly tweeting his congratulations. The Terps tip off at 8 p.m. against the Eagles.
