Maryland forward Charles Mitchell, who had his third double-double this season in a 19-point, 14-rebound effort against Delaware State on Saturday, was named the ACC freshman of the week.

Mitchell’s honor is the second this season for the Terrapins, who had Alex Len win the ACC player of the week after his breakout performance in the opener versus Kentucky.

The freshman currently leads the ACC in rebounding percentage, a measure of the available rebounds grabbed by a given player. And despite playing just 16.0 minutes per game, Mitchell ranks second on the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.

Mitchell’s playing time saw a dip in recent weeks, however, as he gained a little holiday weight and got out of shape. But extra, post-practice conditioning sessions got Mitchell back to his regular self, and he promptly dominated the Hornets down low.

Entering halftime, however, Mitchell had just three rebounds, and only one on the offensive end. Assistant coach Bino Ranson got on Mitchell during the break, and the Atlanta native responded with 11 second-half rebounds, many of them tip-ins for easy buckets.

“Ball bounced his way, which was good to see,” Coach Mark Turgeon said. “He had worked really hard since the Monmouth game to get in shape and get his body right.”

Mitchell has now recorded double-doubles against Georgia Southern, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Delaware State, as many as Alex Len has this season.
