Terps spring football practice report: Day 2

“Stop. Spring practice time.” (Associated Press)

A brief rundown of what happened at the Maryland football team’s latest spring practice.

VITALS

Date: March 5, 2013
Practice number: 2
Duration: A little over two hours, separated into 24 five-minute blocks.
Location: Byrd Stadium
Dress code: Helmets and shorts

ATTENDANCE

Injured and out: RB Wes Brown (ankle/labrum), WR Marcus Leak (toe), WR Levern Jacobs (labrum), LB Cole Farrand (left ankle fracture).

Yellow jerseys: QB C.J. Brown (ACL), QB Ricardo Young, QB Dustin Dailey, QB Caleb Rowe (ACL), QB Perry Hills (ACL), OLB Matt Robinson (labrum). Rowe and Hills both stretched with the team and stood around with the quarterbacks during some drills. Robinson participated fully, but locked his hands behind his back to avoid extending his injured shoulder.

“He’s doing good,” Coach Randy Edsall said about Robinson. “I think he’s understanding what the Sam position is all about and it’s great that we can have him out there getting reps, even if he doesn’t have any contact. Matt’s a smart football player; he picks things up really quickly. I don’t have any issues with him or him not being able to pick things up or adapt to what we want. It’s a better position for him.”

Limited: Rowe, Brown, Hills, Robinson, DL Andre Monroe (knee).

Disciplinary issues: WR Stefon Diggs, OL Mike Madaras, OL Sal Conaboy, WR Deon Long, TE Daniel Adams. All five sat out certain drills, instead undergoing conditioning behind one end zone.

Based on the nature of their “punishment,” it’s safe to say this wasn’t anything major. Basically something along the lines of arriving late to a meeting, treatment or lift would do it. All five still participated in individual drills, but were absent for team work. Expect all five, barring any further issues, to be participating in full this weekend.

“When you don’t care of business and do what you’re supposed to do, you’re not going to practice,” Edsall said. “They have to learn to be accountable for everything that we have. And when we have guys who aren’t going to be accountable for certain things, they aren’t going to practice.”

INJURIES

Nothing significant, but Edsall said WR Tyrek Cheeseboro suffered a minor hamstring tweak.

HEADLINES

>> Both Ricardo Young and C.J. Brown worked with Maryland’s top wide receivers for some one-on-one routes against the defensive backs. Young, the first-team quarterback with Brown still limited in practice, went 6 for 10 with an interception by Will Likely after Young underthrew James Bowman. Young had some nice tosses to Stefon Diggs, who burned his defender on a double move to the outside, and Nigel King, who made a leaping catch over Dexter McDougle. Brown finished the drill by finding Diggs, who torched Undray Clark. Tyrek Cheeseboro also made a nice shoestring catch on an underthrown ball.

Brown competed 3 of 7 passes, nearly getting intercepted by Isaac Goins. One of those incompletions was a dropped pass by Malcolm Culmer. King got by McDougle again on a crossing pattern, and two of Brown’s passes got broken up in solid coverage from Goins (again) and Jeremiah Johnson.

>> Center Evan Mulrooney and defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson got into a little skirmish, with some jersey-grabbing and helmet-tugging. They were separated by teammates while Edsall walked over and barked, “That’s enough. You’re wasting my time.” Based on his punctuality to press conferences, probably the worst thing one could do to Edsall is waste his time.

>> Deja-vu for kicker Brad Craddock. He hit the left uprights on consecutive kicks, first a 35-yarder from the left hash and second a 42-yarder from the center. As you recall, Craddock missed a 33-yarder against North Carolina State that clanged off the left upright. He settled down and drilled a 48-yarder from the right hash after that, and also made his extra point.

Brendan Magistro took his turn after Craddock, hitting his extra point, a 25-yarder from the right hash, a 35-yarder from the left hash and a 42-yarder from the middle. He attempted a 48-yard field goal from the right hash mark that barely reached the end zone.

>> The Terps did some shell work with the following first-team kickoff unit (from left to right): Dexter McDougle, Tyrek Cheeseboro, Alex Twine, Kenneth Goins, Craddock, Abner Logan, Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil, Anthony Nixon, Sean Davis and Jeremiah Johnson. There was one player between Cheeseboro and McDougle, but I missed the jersey number. Apologies all around.

>> A.J. Hendy is coming along at safety.

““I think that’s where he belongs, at safety,” Edsall said. “Right now him and Sean [Davis] are splitting and we’ll he how that progresses, but he’s got the ability. The biggest thing that we told him is we need to see it out of him physically and to be a better tackler. That was really the only thing holding him back; he’s got the ability and he understands the game, but he’s got to put in the physical part and be a better tackler. He’ll get the opportunity this spring to show that.”

>> Darius Kilgo got his hand up to tip a Young pass at the line of scrimmage.

>> Sean Davis picked off quarterback Dustin Dailey at the goal line. Dailey, a transfer who’s serving as Young’s backup this spring, tried to thread a pass through double coverage.

>> Nate Clarke got good penetration to bust up a play in the backfield during red-zone drills.

>> The Terps had DeMatha offensive lineman Brock Ruble and his father on the field for practice (hat-tip to Jakob Engelke for ID’ing him). He weighs over 300 pounds and is a four-star 2014 recruit with 12 offers, including Florida State, North Carolina State, Virginia and Virginia Tech, according to 247sports.com.

>> Look for blogs over the next few days about Nigel King, Brandon Ross and Shawn Petty.
