Maryland signs multi-year agreement with Barclays Center

Maryland has signed a multi-year agreement to play men’s basketball games at the Barclays Center, the Brooklyn, N.Y., arena announced Saturday afternoon.

The Terrapins opened their 2012-13 season against Kentucky, a nationally televised game they lost 72-69. According to the announcement, the Wildcats also signed a similar multi-year deal and will face Providence on Dec. 1.

According to a person familiar with the situation, Maryland’s opponent will be from a major conference. The game’s date is still being finalized.

“We’re looking forward to returning to Barclays Center,” Coach Mark Turgeon said in a statement. “We had a great atmosphere up there this year and Barclays Center is a first-class arena. I know our student-athletes and coaches enjoyed the experience in Brooklyn and appreciated the outstanding support our fans provided us in a great opening game. We’ll look to repeat that again.”

The Barclays Center Classic will take place from Nov. 29-30, featuring St. John’s, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and Penn State.

Because the Terps are scheduled to play in the Paradise Jam on the U.S. Virgin Islands, their Barclays Center matchup will be a one-game deal, and not part of a larger tournament.

Maryland’s nonconference schedule next season also includes George Washington in the BB&T Classic on Dec. 8, 2013.
