Maryland softball scores first series win over Georgia Tech since 2001

Softball

The Terrapins softball team picked up its first series win against Georgia Tech in 12 years over the weekend. Maryland won the final game of the series, 14-5, in five innings Sunday in Atlanta. The Terps hadn’t won a series vs. the Yellow Jackets since 2001. Georgia Tech has won three of the last four ACC titles.

Freshmen Lindsey Schmeiser and Juli Strange each knocked in five RBI as the Terps outscored the Yellow Jackets, 26-16, in the three games.

Maryland (23-22,7-5 ACC) will host Boston College this weekend for a three-game series. They will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free.

Women’s lacrosse

The No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team defeated No. 16 Princeton on Wednesday and Dartmouth on Sunday to finish its home regular season undefeated.

On Sunday, the Terps honored an eight-member senior class that has compiled a 78-7 overall record and lost only one game in College Park. The class has also won three ACC titles and tallied three NCAA Final Four berths.

Alex Aust – who scored six goals against Dartmouth – moved into sole possession of third place on Maryland’s all-time career goals list with 120.

Maryland (16-0) wraps up its regular season at Virginia Tech on Saturday before starting ACC tournament play the last weekend of April as the top overall seed.

Men’s lacrosse

The Terps men’s lacrosse team fell to Johns Hopkins, 7-4, on Saturday in College Park. The Post’s Christian Swezey was on hand. Maryland (8-2) hosts Yale on Saturday at noon at Byrd Stadium.

Baseball

After losing two close games to Miami, Maryland won the series finale over the Hurricanes, 7-2, on Sunday. Jake Stinnett, who pitched five scoreless innings at George Mason on Wednesday, retired 13 of the first 15 Miami batters and held the Hurricanes to one run on three hits with six strikeouts over seven innings to earn his third consecutive victory and improve to 4-3.

With his 33rd stolen base of the season, Charlie White tied Larry Long (1998) for the most stolen bases in a single season in program history.

Maryland (20-18) begins a three-game home series with Virginia Tech on Friday night at 6:30.

Wrestling

Maryland wrestlers Dallas Brown, Domenic DeRobertis and Danny Orem have been named to the 2012-13 all-ACC academic team, the league announced Wednesday.

All-girl spirit squad

The All-Girl spirit squad won its fifth national title in eight years over the weekend at NCA Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Terps scored a 96.08 to knock of the defending champion Louisville, which scored a 95.13. Oklahoma State finished third with a score of 93.95.
