Weekly sports roundup: Terps track shines at Penn Relays

A quick roundup of Maryland’s non-revenue sports.

>> The women’s 4×800-meter relay team set a new school record to finish in the top of the Penn Relays championship division in 8:44.24 last weekend at Franklin Field, ninth overall.

Thea LaFond placed third in the triple jump and eighth in the high jump, setting a personal best in the former event, while Amber Melville tied for third in the high jump.

For the men, Josh Haghighi earned seventh in the shot put.

>> Hunting for second place in the ACC, Maryland scored a doubleheader sweep over North Carolina on Saturday — 9-4 and 9-1 — to clinch the series. Junior Candice Beards hit .500 with three doubles and four RBIs. The Terps (29-24, 11-7 ACC) currently sit in third and close the regular season with a three-game series at Virginia Tech.

>> The Maryland baseball has now won six of seven games, including midweek non-conference victories over Towson (11-3) and Liberty (4-2). Jimmy Reed and Jake Stinnett led the way against Duke over the weekend. Reed earned ACC pitcher of the week honors by hurling a 1-0 complete-game shutout over the Blue Devils, while Stinnett held them to one run on five hits over a career-high nine innings in a 4-1 win.

They visit Clemson this weekend for a three-game set before hosting VCU and then closing out the regular season at home against Boston College.

>> Women’s tennis standout Vroni Van Berlo was named the Terp of the Week after beating the nation’s 25th-ranked player and winning her doubles match. Maryland squeaked by Duke 4-3, its first ACC win and victory over a top 15 team.
