Ohio TE Andrew Gray commits to Terps

The Maryland football team nabbed its fifth recruit for the class of 2014 late Saturday night, picking up an oral commitment from Ohio tight end Andrew Gray, according to multiple reports.

The 6-feet-4, 215-pound Gray had offers from Louisville, Bowling Green and Ball State, according to 247sports.com. Ranked the 47th-best tight end nationally by that particular recruiting service, Gray visited College Park this week to follow up on a Terrapins offer received in early May.

According to the News-Herald, Gray caught just 12 passes for less than 200 yards in 12 games for the Hilltoppers last season, but was described as a “tough, hard-nosed tight end who can move defensive linemen off the ball, while still having the ability to have soft hands to catch the ball.”

“As dominating as he was last season, he was slow and weak in my book,” Chardon Coach Mitch Hewitt told the News-Herald. “He is figuring out now that the sky is the limit for him. I don’t know if he’s even shaved yet. But the sky’s the limit.”

The Chardon High School junior joins quarterback Will Ulmer, running back Johnathan Thomas, offensive lineman Jared Cohen and defensive lineman David Shaw as the current commits for the Terps.

Gray’s pledge could represent what Coach Randy Edsall’s staff hopes to be a shift in Maryland’s recruiting efforts, focusing more on Midwestern, Big Ten territory to coincide with its impending conference move.

The current roster, including the incoming 19-member class of 2013, features zero players from Midwestern states, a zone that was by and large ignored until the Big Ten move was announced last November. The Terps, however, are targeting several prospects from the area for future classes, with an eye on the region at large.
