Boston University, NC Central rounds out non-conference hoops schedule

The Maryland men’s basketball team will round out its 2013-14 non-conference schedule with home games against Boston University and North Carolina Central, an individual with knowledge of the situation said.

The Terriers, the alma mater of Maryland assistant coach Scott Spinelli, will come to College Park on Dec. 21 at a TBD time. They went 17-13 last season (11-5 in the America East) and return a host of contributors, including leading scorer D.J. Irving. Boston University should hover around the 100-125 RPI range, giving Maryland another strong non-conference opponent to support its NCAA Tournament resume.

North Carolina Central went 22-9 last season and finished with an RPI of 162. The Eagles, who went 0-4 against the top 100 RPI last season, will visit Comcast Center on Dec. 31, New Years’ Eve. The Terps hosted IUPUI on New Years’ Day in 2013.

This officially concludes Maryland’s 13-game non-conference schedule, which also recently saw the addition of Abilene Christian, a program transitioning to Division I that won’t count against Maryland’s RPI. Clearly, Ohio State and Connecticut are the marquee games (with Oregon State, coached by first lady Michelle Obama’s brother Craig Robinson a distant third), but Coach Mark Turgeon and his staff succeeded in avoiding the resume-destroying cupcakes on the menu last winter.
