Randy Edsall gives no injury updates but Maryland coach pleased with season-opening win

The first Sunday postgame conference call with Coach Randy Edsall brought little of substance in eight minutes. Edsall expressed satisfaction with getting “the first one under your belt” after the Maryland football team rolled over Florida International, 43-10, behind five touchdowns from quarterback C.J. Brown. The Terrapins reviewed film on Sunday afternoon and corrected whatever minor mistakes surfaced against the Panthers.

Until Atlantic Coast Conference play begins in four weeks, Edsall is not required to release weekly injury reports. Maryland will still announce any new surgeries or players out for the season on Mondays, but the probable/questionable/doubtful chart gets tossed aside until Florida State. This means, unless something catastrophic happened, no update on cornerback Jeremiah Johnson, who limped off the field after a defensive sequence and was reportedly spotted in Gossett Field House wearing a protective boot.

>> Game balls went to Brown (offense), Marcus Whitfield (defense) and Abner Logan (special teams).

>> Five true freshmen appeared, seven fewer than in the 2012 season opener. Edsall praised defensive back Will Likely for some weakside pressure and said running back Jacquille Veii, who had 53 rushing yards with the second-team offense, “did a good job.” Moises Larose is the third tackle on Maryland’s depth chart, and saw plenty of action with the second group. “I think he’ll be a good prospect,” Edsall said. “He has to continue to work but we have to get him ready to play.”

Of the 11 freshmen who traveled to the team hotel, wide receiver DeAndre Lane, tight end Andrew Isaacs, linebacker Jermaine Carter, cornerback Jarrett Ross, kicker Adam Greene and long-snapper Joe Marchese did not play. Before the game, Edsall thought “two or maybe three” of that group would play, but the situations never presented themselves. Edsall mentioned Lane specifically during his postgame news conference, and the speedster could see time this week as Johnson’s backup on the kickoff coverage team.

>> Edsall had little to offer on Old Dominion, next Saturday’s opponent. The Monarchs, playing before the biggest road crowd in program history, fell to East Carolina, 52-38, despite a four-point deficit entering the final quarter. ODU quarterback Taylor Heinicke completed 38 of 51 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns. The Monarchs run a hyper-fast spread offense, and often rely on Heinicke to carry the ground game too; the junior rushed 11 times for 52 yards and another touchdown.

“We’ll get into that,” Edsall said of ODU. “Today’s really a day to clean up from yesterday. We’ll start sitting down tonight as a staff to put a game plan together for ODU after we get done with all our meetings and corrections this afternoon.”
