A.J. Hendy named ACC defensive back of the week, Terps-FSU receives six-day option

September 23, 2013

The awards haul continued for Maryland safety A.J. Hendy, who was named the ACC defensive back of the week one day after receiving Walter Camp defensive player of the week honors.

Hendy followed up teammate Dexter McDougle, whose two interceptions against Connecticut earned him the award last week shortly after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery. Hendy stepped into the nickel role versus West Virginia, promptly recovering two fumbles, returning one interception for a touchdown and sparking a 37-0 rout of the Mountaineers.

This marks the third straight week the Terrapins have placed someone on the ACC awards list. Stefon Diggs was named receiver of the week after a career-high 179 receiving yards against Old Dominion, and both McDougle and linebacker Marcus Whitfield (career-best three sacks) won after a 32-21 win over Connecticut.

>> Maryland received a six-day option for its Oct. 5 game at Florida State, an anticipated showdown of two unbeaten Atlantic Division teams. ESPN exercised one of three six-day options for the weekend, holding over Maryland-FSU, Clemson-Syracuse and Georgia Tech-Miami.
