Maryland’s Randy Edsall says nicked-up Stefon Diggs ‘can’t get frustrated’

Another Maryland football media availability passed without information on quarterback C.J. Brown (concussion). Fans will learn Brown’s status for the ACC home opener against Virginia around 6 p.m. Thursday, when Maryland releases its injury report.

That said, here are some quick notes from Coach Randy Edsall’s fireside chat with beat writers early Thursday afternoon.

>> Four catches over two games constitutes a downturn in productivity for star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and the sophomore was shaken up against both West Virginia and Florida State. In both games, Diggs hobbled off the field after taking footballs between the legs, but nonetheless returned.

So is Diggs 100 percent?

“Eh, probably not,” Edsall said. “A lot of guys aren’t 100 percent at this time of the year. He got dinged up in that West Virginia game a little bit, but like I said, if you really play your tail off in every game at this point in time, you’re not going to be 100 percent. You got to be able to play with the bumps and the bruises.”

But for a receiver whose commanded all manner of attention and delivered all manner of brilliance since arriving in College Park, four catches for 37 yards in two games has to hamper confidence, right?

“He’s practicing,” Edsall said. “That’s the thing, you find out about guys who all of a sudden things don’t go well, you have to go out and work. You can’t get frustrated by it. There’s going to people who take him away. That’s what they’re going to do. Alls he can do is do his job. If the ball comes his way, he has to make sure he catches the ball and does the things he’s supposed to do to get open. He’s just got to keep working. If he does that, then he’ll be fine.”

>> Through five games, eight true freshmen for Maryland have burned their redshirts. Cornerback Will Likely has started three games, linebackers Yannick Ngakoue and Cavon Walker have appeared in all five, and cornerback Jarrett Ross has played in four straight. Seven of those eight have appeared in at least three games.

The one who hasn’t? Wide receiver DeAndre Lane, who appeared on kickoff coverage against Old Dominion after cornerback Jeremiah Johnson fractured his toe. Despite traveling to Connecticut and Florida State, the speedster from nearby Catonsville, Md., hasn’t played since. That year of eligibility isn’t coming back, regardless of whether Lane appears in any more games this season.

So how does Edsall handle these situations, with a young player perpetually existing on the fringes of Maryland’s rotation, with a redshirt already burned but, barring injury ahead of him, no immediate playing time in sight?

“I don’t think you ever talk to them about not playing, because you just don’t know,” Edsall said. “But it’s one of those situations, just from the standpoint of practice and what we’ve been doing and what we saw, that there’s going to be opportunities on special teams probably for him on special teams and some of the things we’re doing as well. But it’s all part of it. We thought he’s a guy who would be able to be in the mix of top six, seven wide receivers, and we’re going to travel that many. We said hey, we don’t know if we’re going to need him, but if we do need him, he’s ready. Plus he’s up practicing with the travel team the whole time, getting all those reps. Regardless of how much he plays, it’s still going to be very, very beneficial to him. He’s still going out there, working very hard, making sure he’s prepared for if his time is called.”

>> Backup kicker Adam Greene, who missed the Florida State trip with a quad injury, was selected as one of five winners of the 2013 NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Awards. The Broadneck (Md.) High School graduate, who broke the state record with 27 career field goals and graduated with a 4.52 weighted GPA, will be at a luncheon on Dec. 10 in Manhattan.

According to a press release, Green is “a five-time Carson Scholar for academic and community service. Greene claimed the Anne Arundel County Scholarship for Scholars Award and the Broadneck Lawrence Knight Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Award. He was also a National AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.”

Oh, and he also volunteers at a church, coaches special needs students, mentors elementary school children, tutors and “supports various charitable organizations.”

>> The Terps will wear black pants, red jerseys and black helmets, just like they did during their season opener against Florida International.

>> Center Sal Conaboy (offense), linebacker L.A. Goree (defense) and safety Zach Dancel (special teams) will be Saturday’s game captains. Running back Albert Reid and linebacker Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil will carry the U.S. and Maryland state flags, respectively.
