Maryland quarterback C.J. Brown, initially listed as doubtful with a concussion, will not play on Saturday afternoon against Virginia, the program announced just prior to kickoff.

Sophomore Caleb Rowe, who spelled Brown after he left last weekend’s 63-0 loss in Tallahassee following a crushing hit from Florida State defensive lineman Jacobbi McDaniel, will make his second career start.

Roundly known as holding the strongest arm among the Terrapins quarterbacks, Rowe threw 42 passes in a 20-17 loss at Boston College last season, but tore his ACL during the game and missed the rest of the year. He has appeared in four of five games this season, completing 14 of 24 passes, mostly in garbage time, for 163 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception.

Brown is currently dressed in full pads for the 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Byrd Stadium, but will spend Maryland’s ACC home opener signaling plays from the sideline alongside backup quarterbacks Perry Hills and Ricardo Young. He warmed up with Rowe, both of them throwing passes to Maryland’s receivers, took snaps from backup center Evan Mulrooney and led team stretches from his usual spot.

Brown’s injury, the first known concussion on his college career, was monitored by trainers and doctors throughout the week as Brown progressed through the team’s standard recovery protocol for such injuries, which includes physical testing and neurocognitive assessments.

Under Rowe, expect Maryland to lean more on the pass, given his relative deficiencies running offensive coordinator Mike Locksley’s zone-option scheme, as the Terps (4-1, 0-1) look to get back on track following last week’s shellacking.
