No further discipline for Terps forward Charles Mitchell

Maryland forward Charles Mitchell, whom Coach Mark Turgeon kicked out of Sunday’s game against Virginia Tech following an incident on the sidelines, will receive no further punishment and can play in Sunday’s regular-season finale.

According to a team spokesman, Mitchell met with Turgeon on Thursday afternoon to discuss the issue, which saw Mitchell begin screaming at assistant coach Scott Spinelli during a timeout shortly before halftime. Mitchell is also eligible to practice Friday, when the Terrapins return to the floor following two days off.

Facing the fifth-ranked Cavaliers without its leading rebounder would have been tough for Maryland, which can help its National Invitational Tournament case with an upset and also pocket some momentum entering the ACC tournament next week. During his two-plus seasons in College Park, Turgeon has issued an in-season suspension only once, though guard Dez Wells was benched for an extended period against Abilene Christian last November for what was later described as a ” miscommunication” with Turgeon.

After Mitchell was kicked out Sunday, he was tracked down by special assistant Juan Dixon and later brought back during the second half. He spent the final several minutes sitting on the end of the bench.
