Terps target and Gonzaga QB Nick Johns to commit Tuesday

Maryland football target and Gonzaga High School junior quarterback Nick Johns will announce his commitment on Tuesday morning, he said via text message.

Johns, ranked a three-star prospect according to Rivals, will choose between the Terrapins, North Carolina State and Virginia. He plans to call the head coaches at all three schools before releasing his decision. Listed at 6 feet 3 and 220 pounds, Johns would be only Maryland’s second oral commitment for its class of 2015, joining offensive lineman E.J. Donahue.

A pledge to the Terps could also change things for another high-profile quarterback target, Kai Locksley. The son of Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley and a standout at Baltimore’s Gilman School, Locksley boasts offers from powerhouses like Oregon, Ohio State, Auburn and Florida State, according to 247sports. He has been weighing the pros and cons of playing for his father, also Maryland’s quarterback coach, in college.

The Terps have reportedly told Johns that they would consider taking multiple signal-callers for their next recruiting class, though one would almost certainly be a developmental project, unlike more college-ready players like Johns and Locksley. Entering the 2015 season, assuming no attrition, they will already have the following quarterbacks on scholarship: Caleb Rowe (senior), Perry Hills (redshirt junior), Shane Cockerille (redshirt sophomore) and Will Ulmer (either redshirt freshman or sophomore, depending on this upcoming season).
