Notes and observations from Maryland football’s open scrimmage

Stefon Diggs played with the second-team offense on Saturday.

Maryland concluded its second week of training camp with an open scrimmage at Byrd Stadium on Saturday. The team’s offense and defense went head to head for about two hours in front of a small crowd, and there were plenty of reps for special teams, too. Here’s a brief rundown of the action, which likely has depth-chart implications for a number of players.

– Senior quarterback C.J. Brown, running back Brandon Ross, wide receiver Marcus Leak, defensive back Alvin Hill and linebacker Cole Farrand were among the notables that did not participate.

– Wide receiver Stefon Diggs played with the second-team offense for a majority of the day Saturday. Deon Long and brothers Levern and Taivon Jacobs were the three starters with the first-team unit. Diggs finished with five cacthes for 30 yards. Here’s Edsall after being asked about Diggs’s place on the depth chart: “Just things we wanted to take a look at. Like I said, we’ve evaluated all throughout camp and we took a look at things and we’re going to evaluate things after this scrimmage. Now we will take a look at where we are and put together a depth chart and personnel groupings as we see fit based on what we’ve seen.”

– Backup quarterback Caleb Rowe ran the first-team offense, and was inconsistent for most of the eight series that he played. He finished 16 of 27 with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was picked off on the opening possession by Sean Davis, and was picked off by Jeremiah Johnson later in the game. Johnson returned the interception for a touchdown. But Rowe had moments where was allowed to show off his strong arm, and he showed some precision on touchdown passes to Long and Taivon Jacobs.

Here’s Edsall on Rowe: “I just wanted to take a look at different guys. I thought Caleb was very inconsistent today. I didn’t think he made a lot of good decisions out there and, again, that’s one of the things I wanted to see. I wanted to see him out there with the ones and get him some work and let him know that he is one play away from having to go in and play. When you are, you have to go out and perform. I don’t think he performed up to his capabilities today. Hopefully he’ll learn from it.”

– Backup Shane Cockerille went 3 for 12 for 22 yards, while Perry Hills went 10 for 17 for 69 yards and two picks.

– With Ross out, running back Albert Reid got a majority of the first-team reps and finished with 41 yards on 10 carries. Wes Brown had one of the best plays of the day, spinning against a defender and dragging two more on a 27-yard run. He finished with 52 yards on 12 carries.

– Long was one of the breakout performers of the scrimmage, taking a quick slant 65 yards for a touchdown early on. He also created space with his routes and flashed power on several jump balls, finishing with eight catches for 136 yards.

– Davis was a defensive standout, picking off Rowe on the first drive and scoring a touchdown after picking up a DeAndre Lane fumble on a punt.

Yannick Ngakoue was very active rushing the passer. He finished with one sack – stripping Rowe with the offense pinned deep in its own territory – and he also batted down another pass.

–Edsall also had praise for true freshman corner Daniel Ezeagwu, who was all over the field Saturday. The secondary also received big plays from Josh Woods, who had a nice over-the-shoulder interception on a deep ball, and junior college transfer Denzel Conyers, who added another pick.

Here’s Edsall on Ezeagwu: “That was a good thing. That’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to see some guys. Alvin [Hill] didn’t go today because we wanted to see Daniel, and now we will evaluate it. He’s done some good things in camp. We’ll see how he graded out today and see if he can get on the bus or if he’s going to be able to contribute in some way.”

–Brad Craddock missed a 50-yard field goal, while redshirt freshman Adam Greene went 1 for 2 with a 47 yarder after missing a previous kick when it clanked off the right post.

–Maryland’s players will have a day off on Sunday, then return Monday for four more days of camp. The team will then enter game-week preparations for the opener against James Madison on Aug. 30. The last open practice will be Tuesday.
