NCAA tournament 2011: Texas holds off Oakland, 85-81

Texas guard J’Covan Brown had 21 points, forward Jordan Hamilton had 19 and forward Tristan Thompson scored 17 as Texas held on to beat Oakland, 85-81. Texas led by as many as 17, but Oakland rallied with a 12-2 run to create some drama in the final minutes.

No. 4 Texas advanced to play the winner of the game between No. 5 Arizona and No. 12 Memphis.

With 45 seconds remaining, Oakland’s Reggie Hamilton rimmed out a three-pointer that would have cut the deficit to three points. Oakland, a popular upset pick by many (including me), had a chance, but shot just 43.4 percent overall and made 7 of 31 three-point shots.

Meantime, Michigan is closing in on closing out Tennessee in what could very well be the final game of the Bruce Pearl tenure.
