Celebrate National Coffee Day with free cups of joe

Where will you celebrate National Coffee Day? (Evy Mages - For The Washington Post)

On the heels of its naming as the sixth most caffeinated U.S. city — trailing behind Chicago, New York, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles — the District is getting a chance to up its ranking.

Thursday is National Coffee Day, and national chains across the Washington area are offering special promotions.

7-11: From 7 to 11 a.m. (clever, huh?), the Dallas-based chain is giving away free medium-size cups of coffee to its customers. (Find a location.)

Krispy Kreme: The doughnut maker is giving away 12-ounce cups of its house blend coffee. (Find a location.)

Caribou Coffee: Buy one cup of coffee, get one free. (Find a location.)

Starbucks: No promotions planned. (Find a location anyway.)
