Naming rights are being sold for seemingly everything these days from stadiums to monkeys, but the state of Virginia has broken new ground by concocting a plan to auction off the naming rights for its 42 rest stops.
Gov. Bob McDonnell says the move will help defray the annual $20 million cost of keeping the pit stops open in lean budget times, but its an open question whether corporations will want to afix their name to a place associated with potty breaks. Imagine: The Dale City rest stop brought to you by Stop-N-Go.
“We would certainly welcome and encourage anyone to submit a proposal,” a Virginia transportation official said last week. We’re taking Joe Vagi at his word.
