Franklin E. Kameny, a leader in the the gay rights movement since its inception, died in his home Tuesday, the Washington Blade reports. He was 86.
Kameny was a founding member of Washington’s first gay civil rights organization, the Mattachine Society, coining the “Gay is Good” slogan in 1968 and serving as a leading strategist in the movement for decades.

Kameny died on National Coming Out Day, a movement started by the Human Rights Campaign. Supporters are taking to Twitter to remember him:
