Google map glitch jumps gun on ICC opening

A six-mile stretch of the Intercounty Connector opened to much fanfare last month, linking I-270 in Gaithersburg to Georgia Avenue in Olney. But according to Google maps, the entire 18.8-mile toll road is open for business — more than one year ahead of schedule.

Oops.

The Baltimore Sun wrote about the glitch after a search for directions from Landover to Olney showed “a road that doesn’t exist yet.”

The error has the potential to wreak havoc for drivers who don’t know the ICC is only partially complete.

The ICC, also known as Route 200, is Maryland's first all-electronic toll road and is scheduled to open in full by spring 2012.
