A monster 143-pound blue catfish has been certified as the largest ever caught in Virginia, smashing the previous record by more than 30 pounds, state wildlife officials said.
The fish, which was caught in the Kerr Reservoir along the Virginia-North Carolina border, may also set a world record. It is only the third freshwater fish caught in Virginia that is above 100 pounds, according to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
A North Carolina man hooked the catfish on Saturday. The International Game Fish Association is handling the certification of the fish as a world record. The current record holder is a 130-pound fish caught in the Missouri River in 2010.
