Wednesday is National HIV Testing Day, and dozens of sites around the District are offering free opportunities to get checked.
Local churches, health care facilities and some pharmacies are conducting the tests free of charge in an effort to spread awareness and increase diagnoses of HIV and AIDS.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a million Americans have the disease — but as many as 20 percent don’t know they’re infected. Officials say this is because people can live symptom-free for years.
The full list of free testing sites in D.C. can be found here. The Walgreens pharmacy in Foggy Bottom is also offering free testing.
