Photos of Beatles’ first concert to be auctioned

All true Washingtonians know that the first Beatles concert in the United States was Feb. 11, 1964, at the old Washington Coliseum.

This Feb. 11, 1964, photo was provided by Christie's auction house, from a collection of photos of The Beatles shot by photographer Mike Mitchell at the Washington Coliseum, two days after their appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” (By Mike Mitchell/Associated Press)
We’ve had many stories about it over the years, including reminiscences by people who were there (or said they were; but I guess we can trust Paul McCartney).

Now, an enterprising 18-year-old who took close-up photos at the concert is going to sell them July 20 at Christie’s auction house in New York. The batch of 50 silver gelatin prints is estimated to be worth $100,000 but the images will sell individually.
