Supreme Court to tackle hot-button issues in new term

Convening for its 2011-2012 term Monday, the Supreme Court is faced with a slate of cases involving nearly every controversial issue in the United States, from gay marriage to health-care reform.

Read up on a few of the issues using the links below. Then take our poll to tell us which case you think will have the biggest impact on American society.

Health-care reform: Is it unconstitutional to require nearly all Americans to purchase health insurance by 2014? Read more.

Gay marriage: Does a state law that defines marriage as between only a man and a woman (such as California’s Proposition 8) violate the civil rights of same-sex couples? Read more.
