Virginia Tech prepares for slain officer’s funeral; shooter’s family sends condolences

Ahead of Deriek Crouse’s funeral at Virginia Tech on Monday, shooter Ross Truett Ashley’s family sent its condolences to the slain officer’s survivors.


View Photo Gallery: Virginia Tech police officer Deriek W. Crouse, 39, was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop, and the second person, the gunman, took his life in a nearby parking lot, officials said. The gunman was a part-time student at a nearby university.

“The Ashley family would like to offer their condolences to the family of Officer Crouse,” the statement, faxed to the Associated Press on Sunday, said. “Officer Crouse and his family are in their prayers.”

Crouse’s funeral begins at 2 p.m. and you’ll find it streaming it live below. Gov. Bob McDonnell is slated to deliver remarks.
