Wear a Life Jacket to Work Day kicks off Safe Boating Week in Maryland

Would you wear a life jacket to work? (Chris Helgren - Reuters)
National Bike to Work Day might be getting all the attention today, but in Maryland, it’s also Wear a Life Jacket to Work Day.

In an effort to increase boating safety awareness, Maryland’s Natural Resources Police are encouraging people to swap their suit jackets for flotation devices.

Officials note that people aren’t limited to wearing their life jackets to work; other non-typical settings are fair game for a fashion statement on Friday.

In Maryland, there were 184 boating accidents in 2011, resulting in 24 deaths. Officials said the deaths could have been prevented with the use of a life jacket.

Wear a Life Jacket to Work Day is part of a nationwide campaign called “Ready, Set, Wear It,” which kicks off National Safe Boating Week.

Canada is also joining in on the safety-promoting fashion statement, using Facebook to encourage people to don the vests.
