Huntsman steps forward, forms PAC

Former Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman is getting closer to a run for president, forming a political action committee just days after leaving his administration job. (Petar Kujundzic/REUTERS) Former Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman has formed a political action committee as he inches closer to entering the 2012 Republican presidential primary.

The formation of H PAC allows Huntsman, who wrapped up his tenure as ambassador in recent days, to begin traveling the country and conducting political activities. Previously, a campaign-in-waiting called Horizon PAC had been preparing for a potential Huntsman presidential campaign as he wrapped up his time as the top U.S. envoy in Beijing.

H PAC will allow Huntsman to raise money, but he can’t roll that money into a presidential campaign. Advisers stressed that the PAC is only needed to hold him over for the next several weeks, at which time he can make a formal decision.

“He took an organizational step that will allow him to travel the country, discuss issues that are important to him, and support Republican candidates,” spokesman Tim Miller said.

Now that Huntsman is free to practice politics, he has been moving quickly toward running. He met with advisers for the first time Monday and is widely expected to run.

Horizon PAC has already assembled a top-tier team of consultants for the campaign-in-waiting, including John Weaver, who was a top adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), and pollster Whit Ayres.
