Mitt Romney allies start attacking Rick Santorum in South

By ,

The anti-Rick Santorum ad blitz is expanding.

A super PAC supporting Mitt Romney is attacking the former Pennsylvania senator in Alabama, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Tennessee as the “ultimate Washington insider.”

The ad airs now-familiar arguments — that Santorum worked in Washington, voted to raise the debt limit five times and voted for the “Bridge to Nowhere.” Negative information about Santorum is contrasted with positive information about Romney — perhaps an attempt to blunt the effect so many negative ads are having on the former Massachusetts governor’s favorability rating.

This week, Restore Our Future is spending $36,603 in Oklahoma and $108,531 in Tennessee, according to a Republican media buyer. They plan to spend another $199,548 in Oklahoma and $426,400 in Tennessee next week; ad buys for Alabama and Mississippi have yet to be placed.

As we wrote earlier today, Santorum is a more difficult target than former House speaker Newt Gingrich.
