New Ron Paul ad attacks Rick Santorum: ‘Is this dude serious?’

Another sign that Rick Santorum is the new front-runner — he’s under attack from Ron Paul.

In a clever new ad, the libertarian-leaning Texas House member attacks the former Pennsylvania senator as a faux fiscal conservative.

“Is this dude serious?” the narrator asks over a cartoon of Santorum. “Fiscal conservative, really?” The ad then runs down various spending Santorum supported while in the Senate. In the end, it compares Santorum the fiscal conservative to Bigfoot — “Fake.”

There’s a shot at Santorum’s social conservative credentials, too — the ad claims he “even hooked Planned Parenthood up with a few million bucks.”

It’s true that Santorum voted for funding for contraception through Title X, and some of that money goes to Planned Parenthood (a group he wants to defund). But it’s hard to imagine the social conservative losing support to Paul on this issue.

Paul has gone very negative this cycle; he’s also produced some of the slickest television spots.

The ad will air in a low-six-figure buy in Michigan, where Paul is polling in third or fourth place. It will also be part of a Super Tuesday ad blitz being announced Wednesday, according to the Paul campaign.
