Rick Santorum ad: Mitt Romney ‘just like Obama’

By ,

Hours before sparring with him in Monday’s South Carolina debate over negative ads, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum released a spot there calling former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney “just like Obama.”

“Obama supported the Wall Street bailouts — so did Romney,” the narrator says. “Obama gave us radical Obamacare — that was based on Romneycare. Obama’s a liberal on social issues. Romney once bragged he’s even more liberal than Ted Kennedy on social issues.”

The ad concludes: “Why would we ever vote for someone who is just like Obama when we can unite around Rick Santorum and beat Obama?”

It’s a harsh new line of attack for Santorum, who previously stuck to positive spots in the Palmetto State. During the debate, he criticized Romney for ads run by a super PAC supporting the frontrunner.

Most polls show Santorum a distant third after Romney and former House speaker Newt Gingrich in the Jan. 21 contest.

The attack ad is set to start airing Wednesday; it’s a little under a half-million dollars ad buy, according to a source close to the campaign.
