The Fix’s “Sweet 2016” bracket: Introducing the Elite Eight!

at 10:42 AM ET, 03/22/2012

After a furious first round of voting in our “Sweet 2016” bracket competition to find the favorite candidate in the next presidential race, the original top 16 have been narrowed to the Elite Eight!

The Republican side was largely chalk with top seeds taking care of business. The most fascinating Elite Eight matchup? Former Florida governor Jeb Bush against Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for a spot in the Final Four.

The Democrats provided plenty of upsets, however. While New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the overall #1 seed, cruised to victory over Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, the bracket was thrown into chaos everywhere else. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (our #7 seed due to her pledge not to ever run for another office) upended Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick , setting up a fascinating race against the woman who replaced her in the Senate — New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand — in the Elite Eight.

The full bracket is below. Don’t forget to vote for your favorites. If you don’t vote for him/her, you can’t be upset when they don’t make the Final Four, which we’ll announced on Monday. You have until 6 p.m. on Sunday night to vote. Get to it!
