WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED:

* A new Gallup poll of registered voters gives President Obama a six-point lead over Mitt Romney after the Democratic National Convention. Obama leads Romney 50 percent to 44 percent in the national poll. A Gallup survey taken just before the convention showed Obama and Romney running about even, with the president at 47 percent and Romney at 46 percent.

* Under criticism from Democrats for not mentioning Afghanistan or recognizing U.S. troops in his speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Romney praised veterans, troops and civilian responders during an address at a National Guard gathering in Reno, Nev. He also paid tribute to those who lost their lives Sept. 11, 2001. Romney made no new policy announcements with regard to Afghanistan.

* Obama marked the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with a somber speech at a memorial service at the Pentagon. "Eleven times we have marked another September 11th come and gone. Eleven times, we have paused in remembrance, in reflection, in unity and in purpose. This is never an easy day," the president said to families and military personnel gathered at the Pentagon.

* As part of an $8.1 million swing state ad buy, Romney has bought $361,000 worth of airtime in Wisconsin. His running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.), will begin running House reelection campaign ads Wednesday, an effort which could serve to complement the Romney ads in the state.

WHAT YOU SHOULDN'T MISS:

* At a memorial in Pennsylvania for the victims of United Flight 93, Vice President Biden invited firefighters, including one he met last year, to the White House for beer. "I’m still going to be vice president in January," Biden said, adding, "I give you my word. I’m not just saying it.”

* Markwayne Mullin, the Republican nominee and front-runner to succeed retiring Rep. Dan Boren (D-Okla.), is in a Tulsa hospital in good condition after he sustained a tear in his esophagus.

* Connecticut Republican Senate nominee Linda McMahon has qualified to appear on the ballot as both the Independent Party candidate and the Republican nominee. This means she will appear on the ballot twice, as will Rep. Chris Murphy (D), who is also the choice of the Working Families Party.

The Indiana Debate Commission announced that Senate debates between Treasurer Richard Mourdock (R), Rep. Joe Donnelly (D) and the Libertarian Party candidate have been slated for Oct. 15 and Oct. 23. In the gubernatorial race, Rep. Mike Pence (R) and Democratic nominee John Gregg will debate Oct. 10, 17 and 23rd.
