A momentous week in American politics — in 10 events

WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED:

* New employment numbers: Democrats and Republicans, as expected, offered competing reactions to the latest monthly jobs report, which on Friday showed the unemployment rate ticking down from 7.9 percent to 7.7 percent. Democrats hailed the numbers, while Republicans said it was not enough.

* Michigan moves: A day after Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) announced that he won't run for reelection next year, there's been a flurry of movement in the Wolverine State. Rep. Gary Peters (D) said he will seriously consider running for Levin's seat, while on the Republican side, Mitt Romney's brother Scott Romney is considering a bid. Meanwhile, four Republicans said they will not run: Attorney General Bill Schuette, Rep. Candice Miller, former attorney general Mike Cox, and 2012 GOP Senate candidate Clark Durant. Former state GOP chairman Saul Anuzis isn't ruling out a bid.

* R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) responded to criticism Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has lobbed against him, saying in an interview, "I treat Sen. McCain with respect, I don't know if I always get the same in return." McCain, who opposed Paul's filibuster of now-CIA Director John Brennan, also referred to Paul, along with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), as "wacko birds" in a separate interview.

* Switcheroo in Rhode Island? Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I), whose polling numbers are lousy, is being wooed by Democratic Governors Association Chairman Peter Shumlin of Vermont to run as a Democrat. A three-way race could allow a Republican to sneak though with a win, so the courtship makes some sense. With such lousy numbers, it's not a certainty that Chafee would make it through a Democratic primary.

* Climate meeting: President Obama hosted a Thursday meeting to discuss energy and climate policies with outside experts and and business executives. The Keystone XL  pipeline permit was not discussed.

* The new norm: Former Minnesota Republican senator Norm Coleman ruled out a challenge against Gov. Mark Dayton (D) or any other run for any office in 2014. He's previously ruled out a rematch with Sen. Al Franken (D).

* No Illinois surprise: Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) has reportedly told top Democrats he'll seek reelection in 2014. Durbin is the Senate's second-ranking Democrat.

* Dinner with friends: The Clintons dined at the White House on the day the sequester took effect.

* Gimme five: Jeb Bush is doing the "full Ginsberg" on Sunday, appearing on all five morning news shows.
