The Hastert Rule, RIP

The time of death for the Hastert Rule was 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday. That's when the House passed a compromise to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling with just 87 Republican votes, well short of a majority of the majority.

In truth, the Hastert Rule, much like that burglar on "The Simpsons," was already dead.  A minority of the Republican majority had previously voted for the fiscal cliff deal, Hurricane Sandy relief funds and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. But, this week was the final nail in the coffin. In the "In Play" clip below, we give the Hastert Rule a proper burial.
