Writing about 2016 and Writing about How It’s Too Early to Write about 2016: A History

Today, the Daily Beast published an article titled, “It’s 1,000 Days Too Early to Talk Hillary vs. Christie for President." As noble as the sentiment might be, it's a bit late, since the media has been offering thoughts about 2016 since at least 1996. However, the Beast piece is part of a grand tradition of campaign writing that is perhaps even more robust than making predictions about 2016 -- debating whether it is too early to write about the 2016 presidential election. Below, you can browse through an excerpt of the unabridged anthology of pre-invisible campaign articles writing about 2016 -- and writing about writing about the 2016 election -- which we assume will be published in early 2015.

October 27, 1996: “It's 2016, and even though Election Day is several weeks away, voters can be sure of one thing: the next President of the United States will be a woman, maybe even a woman who used to be Governor of New Jersey.”

May 29, 2006: “But Republican Party leaders continue to talk seriously about a continuation of the dynasty, a Bush III administration, with Jeb as a candidate in 2012 or 2016, when the memory of the current president's dismal poll ratings will be less of a factor. That, at least, is what happened the last time around: President George Bush's unpopularity at the end of his term in 1992 did not hurt his eldest son when he ran for president eight years later.”

November 2, 2008: “For the friends and allies already thinking about Mrs. Clinton’s political future, the possibility of a victory by Senator John McCain on Tuesday would upend an array of assumptions, not least of which that Mrs. Clinton — if she were to run again — would not do so until 2016, when she would be turning 69.”
