The remarkable longevity of Henry Waxman — as told through 8 ‘Almanac of American Politics’ photos

California Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman announced Thursday he won't be running for a 21st term this November, bringing to an end a career in the House that has spanned 40 years and produced scads of legislation.

It's hard to wrap your mind around just how long Waxman has spent walking the halls of the Capitol but we are going to try. Below are the eight different photos of Waxman that have been used in the biennial "Almanac of American Politics" aka the political junkies bible. (Read our ode to the book.)

(Fun fact: In the pre-Fix period of my life -- yes, that was a thing -- I was a researcher on the 2000 Almanac along with NBC's Chris Donovan among others.  One of the worst parts of that job was calling every Members' office and asking them for a new picture. If the picture in the previous edition was a good one, they wanted to keep it -- and we were not supposed to let them. If it was a bad one, they wanted to make clear how offended they were that "we" had used such a bad one. Those were the days....)
