Map: The United 38 States of America

We'll admit it: We're suckers for ways to reimagine the political boundaries of the United States.

Below, we have a four-decade-old attempt from California State University geography professor C. Etzel Pearcy.


In reducing the map from 50 to 38 states, Pearcy aimed to save the government money and normalize the old map, which was constructed piece by piece based on geographic features (and westward expansion) rather than on population centers. The new map would place these population centers in the middle of states rather than have them straddling multiple states or near the borders.
